California is a small field with a big footprint: two accredited Doctor of Chiropractic programs, in one of the densest chiropractic regions anywhere. It is also a state where outdated lists cause real confusion, because a third California campus closed in 2025. What follows is the current roster, checked against the Council on Chiropractic Education directory, with the facts each school publishes about its own program.
The two California programs
Life Chiropractic College West — Hayward
In Hayward, on the east side of the San Francisco Bay, roughly half an hour from Oakland and San Francisco. The program runs on a year-round quarter system. Life West also operates an additional education site in Bellevue, Nebraska, accredited in January 2026, which the CCE lists alongside the Hayward campus. The program runs 14 quarters, about three and a half years. Southern California University of Health Sciences — Whittier
In Whittier, in the Los Angeles metro area. SCU publishes two pathways through the same Doctor of Chiropractic degree: a standard track it describes as “Complete in 3 years and 4 months” and an accelerated track it describes as “Complete in 2 years and 8 months,” both full-time, daytime and primarily on-ground, “coming to campus 3-4 days per week.” SCU’s program page
A campus that closed
Palmer College of Chiropractic ran a San Jose, California campus, which closed in 2025. It is no longer in the CCE directory, and older articles and lists that still include it are out of date. Palmer’s remaining campuses are Davenport, Iowa and Port Orange, Florida.
How chiropractic licensure works in California
California licenses chiropractors through the Board of Chiropractic Examiners. The board’s own guide to getting licensed sets out these requirements:
What California requires
Degree. “You must receive a Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) degree from a board-approved college.” The board maintains that list of approved colleges itself, which is not identical to simply holding CCE accreditation — check that your program appears on the board’s list.
National boards. “Chiropractic students must pass parts I, II, III, IV, and physiotherapy of the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners (NBCE) exam to be eligible to apply for a state license.”
State law exam. The California Chiropractic Law Examination, which the board says “is administered through computerized testing on a continuous basis.”
Application. An application with a 2-inch-by-2-inch photograph, Live Scan fingerprinting, and a standard license application fee the board lists at $371.
